Small Business Lessons I’ve Learned in the Past 10 Years

This post shares the biggest business lessons I’ve picked up over ten years of running The Professional Writer, from managing cash flow and building systems to the relationships, referrals and confidence that have shaped everything I do. If you’re a small business owner after real, lived business lessons rather than theory, this is what’s worked for me.

A Picture of the Past

A photo popped up in my Facebook memories today. Ten years old, taken at a small business expo on the Gold Coast. I was standing behind my little pop up banner, so proud, so ready to tell everyone what The Professional Writer was all about. Small business lessons I've learned

The business itself goes back much further than that though. I’ve had the business name since 1998, and the website since 2003 – a much different version! For a long time, it stayed part-time, something I ran alongside a proper job because the timing never quite felt right to go all in. My children were younger then, and I was juggling: Husband (only one, thank goodness), two kids, a part-time job and a fledgling business, all at once.

Then my parents became unwell. At one stage, Mum and Dad were both in the same hospital, at the same time. Then my Dad passed away. It took me quite a while to realise that if I kept waiting for the right time, it was never going to come.

So in 2016, I finally stepped up and went for it, full time. That expo on the Gold Coast was part of that leap, one of my first real pushes to get out there and get noticed.

What I didn’t know then was that none of my work would actually come from expos or banners. It would come from relationships. From happy clients. From referrals passed on by people who believed in what I do.

Looking at the photo … The branding is much better now. The messaging is clearly aimed at my ideal clients. Even the services are barely recognisable. My business has certainly evolved.

Back then, I was writing real estate scripts. These days, I don’t touch them. Instead, based on client demand and results, I specialise in writing business award submissions, website copy and capability statements. These services  have become the biggest part of what I do, something I couldn’t have predicted a decade ago. Back then, I didn’t even know what a capability statement was! 🙂

It’s strange and wonderful to see how much a business can grow and evolve when you:

  • Keep showing up
  • Keep listening to your clients and learning exactly what they need, and
  • Keep saying yes to the work that lights you up

Relationships Are Everything

One of the biggest business lessons I’ve learned over the years I’ve been running this business:

*** In business & life, relationships matter more than anything else! ***

How you treat people matters. Good quality, personal service matters.

I’ve built The Professional Writer on the idea that every client, every project, every small interaction deserves my full attention. I give 100% on every project, every time. No exceptions.

That approach has shaped everything, including one of the best decisions I’ve made in business: joining BNI.

I know BNI isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But for me, it’s honestly been a game changer. It’s given me professional development, growth in my business and my own knowledge, and genuine friendships and support from a group of people who genuinely want to see each other succeed. The referrals generated by my BNI referral partners now account for around 30% of my business. I wouldn’t be where I am today without those incredible people. Thank you.

Financial and Operational

Some of the hardest business lessons I’ve learned have come from the financial and operational side of running a service business. Here’s what stuck with me:

  • Cash flow is king. Tracking your financials daily or weekly isn’t optional, it’s essential. Ensuring invoices are paid on time is vital – I’ve even put it in my contracts. I set up separate accounts for tax and GST, and separate savings too. That one change created a huge shift for me.
  • Systems set you free. Relying on hustle alone eventually leads to burnout. Documenting your processes and building standard routines is what allows a business to scale properly. One of the best things I’ve done is invest in a solid CRM and standardise the repetitive tasks. It saves me many hours every week.
  • Know your worth. Undercharging out of fear doesn’t protect you. It just attracts clients who drain your time and energy for too little return. When it comes to competitive pricing, nobody wins the race to the bottom. I’ve learned to value my expertise and charge appropriately. Honestly, that took a while to get right.

People and Leadership

These people and leadership moments have taught me some of the most important business lessons of all.

  • No man or woman is an island. Building a small team around me has changed everything. I now have a lovely virtual assistant, a bookkeeper and a business coach, all of whom have supported and guided me along the way.
  • The right clients matter. Figuring out who my ideal clients actually are was a real turning point. There’s no point chasing every lead when some simply aren’t the right fit. I’ve learned to say no, or to refer work elsewhere, when I know a client isn’t right for me, or I’m not the best fit for their needs.
  • Remember to manage your own wellbeing. Your physical and mental health dictate how resilient your business can be. Setting clear boundaries between work and life prevents the kind of chronic stress that eventually catches up with you.

Business Lessons: The Key Takeaway

If there’s one business lesson that sits above all the others, it’s this: confidence is key. Believe in yourself, and others will too.

Ten years, so many clients, so many projects, so much growth. I’m proud of what The Professional Writer has become, and even more proud of the relationships that built it. It’s an award-winning business, just like so many of my amazing clients.

To everyone who’s supported me along the way, thank you. You’ve been an important part of this journey, and I wouldn’t be here without you.

I hope these business lessons resonate with you.

If you’re ready to have your own business story and messaging reviewed with fresh eyes, I’d love to help.
